This September, creative nonfiction writers, readers, and all-around enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet, talk shop and craft, network, and see and hear presentations from some of the best in the business. Entering another year after a very successful run in 2016, HippoCamp is an event hosted by Hippocampus Magazine. Hippocampus, which aims to “ to entertain, educate and engage writers and readers of creative nonfiction,” states that HippoCamp is an extension of these goals. Slated to occur from Friday, September 8 through Sunday, September 10 (including pre-conference and post-conference goings-on), the event promises to be packed with content.
This year, HippoCamp’s headliner is none other than Tobias Wolff. Wolff is scheduled for an evening keynote complete with book signing and Q&A session. He is joined by fellow keynotes Beverly Donofrio and Dinty W. Moore. Donofrio will be providing the opening keynote on Friday afternoon about story-sharing. Moore will be providing the closing keynote Sunday afternoon. In addition to the proper conference, there will be plenty of pre-conference activities on Friday, as well as post-conference pitch sessions late Sunday afternoon.
Topics and formats abound during the conference. In addition to traditional presentations and speakers, the conference boasts open mics, ‘flash panels’, a debut author panel, a literature swap, book sale and more. Topics stretch from speculation as a tool in CNF to the gritty detail work of copy editing to the sometimes-messy blending of genres in CNF to the role of trauma in memoir. Truly, there is a corner of HippoCamp for absolutely anybody who has an interest in creative nonfiction works.
Early bird registration for the event has long been sold out, but regularly updating information about the event is available on HippoCamp’s website. In addition to the highlighting of speaker for the conference this fall, one can also find a complete listing of the forty plus professionals who will be hosting panels/events/etc throughout the weekend and a complete listing of those events.
